About Alan Ducatman
Dr. Alan Ducatman's research interests include occupational and environmental toxicity and prevention of diseases potentially related to environmental exposures. His current environmental research focuses on the human population aspects of perfluorocarbon exposure. Similarly, Dr. Ducatman’s clinic provides diagnostic and intervention advice to patients concerned with exposure to toxins. Dr. Ducatman also collaborates with clinical laboratory scientists and clinicians to create comparative effectiveness research for laboratory utilization practices. For both types of research, his aspiration is to improve the health of populations.
Dr. Ducatman served as Interim Founding Dean, School of Public Health, at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. The School of Public Health is the first fully new school/college at WVU in 50 years. He was also the chair of the WVU Department of Community Medicine for 15 years, and director of WVU’s Occupational Medicine residency program..
Dr. Ducatman received the MD degree from Wayne State University and the MSc in Environmental Health from the City University of New York. He completed his residency training at Brown University and at the Mayo Clinic, and he is board-certified in Internal Medicine and in Occupational Medicine. His national leadership history includes service as Chair, Residency Review Committee in Preventive Medicine, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He has also served as Chair, Board of Scientific Counselors, National Environmental Health Center and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Ducatman is a frequent consultant to industry, government, nonprofit organizations, and patient or community groups regarding occupational and environmental health, and public health interventions. He currently serves as a member of the West Virginia Governor’s Advisory Council on Substance Abuse.

Research Interests
Dr. Alan Ducatman’s research involves the following:
1) Health outcomes following environmental exposures of human populations
2) Use of secondary data to address environmental health questions
3) Participation in teams that evaluate local health outcomes near point sources
4) Experience with many phases of extractive industries related to energy
5) Environmental perfluorocarbon exposure, and related biomarkers of human physiologic response
I am board certified in Internal Medicine, and in Occupational (Preventive) Medicine. I maintain an active clinical consultation practice with a large geographic referral base, which informs my research in the environment and community responses to the stressors of living near industrial operations. I am accustomed to participating in multi- and interdisciplinary teams who address exposure-outcome questions of national importance.
