Emily Wheeler began her medical career at a young age, finishing a Nurses’ Aide course at 15 years old so that she could begin working in a nursing home as soon as she turned 16—when it was legal. She worked there through high school and college, and during college obtained her EMT certification, followed by her paramedic certification. She worked as a paramedic for 4 years following college until matriculation into medical school. She has always had a heart for underserved communities and spent several years working for a program in Pittsburgh that served teenaged mothers. She has also taken three trips to Haiti to help with dental work and a trip to Cameroon to help with critical care, emergency medicine, and resident education. Medicine isn’t her only passion, though. She was raised in the country and remains an outdoorswoman at heart. She also enjoys painting and playing the piano.
