About Jennifer Wheeler-Johnson
Jenni Johnson serves as the Director of Clinical Education for the Division of Athletic Training in the School of Medicine at West Virginia University. She earned her Master of Science in Health and Wellness from the University of Kentucky and her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training from West Virginia University. She is currently completing her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Leadership Studies at Marshall University.
Jenni is an active leader within the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and will begin serving on the NATA Board of Directors in 2027. She was also elected as the District Three Director for the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers' Association (MAATA), becoming the first athletic trainer from West Virginia elected to this position. Within the West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association (WVATA), she has served as President-Elect, President, and Past President, and currently serves on the WVSSAC Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
Her professional accomplishments include receiving the NATA SAAC Excellence in Leadership Award (2020), being inducted as the first female member of the WVATA Hall of Fame (2023), earning WVATA Educator of the Year (2024), the MAATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award (2025), and the MAATA Director's Award for Service (2026). In addition to her leadership and teaching responsibilities, Jenni continues to provide athletic training coverage for numerous West Virginia high school state championship events.
