About Christopher McCartney
Dr. McCartney completed medical school and internal medicine residency at the University of Mississippi (1992–1999), thereafter completing a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Virginia (UVA; 1999–2002). He was a faculty member at UVA from 2002 to 2023, but in early 2024, Dr. McCartney came to WVU to serve as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine. Dr. McCartney's clinical (patient-oriented) research has largely focused on reproductive neuroendocrinology and the pathophysiology of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and he has been the recipient of an NIH K23 career-development award, two NIH R01 grants, and an R01-equivalent grant (NIH P50 project). Dr. McCartney has been heavily involved with the Endocrine Society: He has chaired the Clinical Guidelines Committee (2018–2021) and the Conflict of Interest Advisory Group (2021–2023); he was Clinical Science Chair for the 2023 Annual Meeting Steering Committee; he was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (2023–2024); and he will be a member of the Society’s Board of Directors (2026–2029). Dr. McCartney has also had a long-standing interest in graduate medical education and mentorship: He served as endocrinology fellowship program director at UVA (2011–2020); he was President of the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology and Metabolism from 2018 to 2020; and he currently serves as Co-Director for West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s Fellows Research Academy and Resident Research Academy.
