About Adam Howard
Adam Howard, MD is Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at West Virginia University, where he specializes in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction. Since joining the faculty in 2023, he has been actively involved in clinical care, research, and medical education. Dr. Howard completed his fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon (2022-2023), following his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Chicago (2017-2022).
Dr. Howard earned his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California, Davis. He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, having passed both written and oral examinations in 2022 and 2023, respectively. His clinical training has provided him with expertise in complex head and neck cancer surgery, microvascular reconstruction, and robotic surgical techniques.
At West Virginia University, Dr. Howard is leading multiple clinical research studies including investigations of free flap outcomes, enhanced recovery protocols for head and neck cancer patients, and virtual surgical planning for mandibular reconstruction. He is a co-investigator on the ADJUST trial, examining adjuvant therapy utilizing surgery and tumor DNA for risk stratification in head and neck cancer patients. His research focuses on optimizing surgical outcomes and improving patient care through innovative techniques and protocols.
In his role at WVU, Dr. Howard is actively engaged in resident and medical student education, regularly delivering departmental lectures on topics including thyroid and parathyroid diseases, salivary gland pathology, and head and neck cancer management. He has served as a featured speaker at the West Virginia Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and leads educational sessions for the medical student otolaryngology interest group. His commitment to advancing the field is demonstrated through his ongoing research, educational contributions, and membership in professional organizations including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and American Head and Neck Society.
