Program Design
The program will consist of three web-based learning modules to educate practicing school-based Speech-Language Pathologists about the requirements of supervising for a variety of mentorship scenarios. A conceptual draft of these modules can be seen in the table below.
Module 1: This module will provide information to enhance clinical education supervisors’ knowledge on how their role aligns with that of the traditional educator in terms of providing supervision in consideration of the supervisees’ needs. Speakers for this session will be Pam Holland and Karen Haines. The following objectives have been identified: 1. Participants will explain the relationship between traditional cooperating teachers’ roles and their supervisory roles with Speech-Language Pathology graduate students as defined by ASHA and in WVDE policy 5100. (Holland) 2. Participants will demonstrate an ability to use supervisory rating forms appropriately in compliance with university clinical education guidelines and aligning with WVDE policy 5100. (Haines and Holland) 3. Participants will incorporate constructive feedback and critique into their assessment of Speech-Language Pathology graduate students to enhance the learning process as understood in supervisory models for Communication Sciences Disorders and in recognition of adult learning literature. (Haines)
Module 2: This module will provide information to enhance clinical education supervisors’ knowledge on educational strategies to enhance student learning and promote critical thinking in Speech-Language Pathology graduate students. Speakers for this session will be Leslie Graebe and Pam Holland. The following objectives have been identified: 1. Participants will define critical thinking skills and explore ways that this can be developed in Speech-Language Pathology graduate students under their supervision. (Graebe) 2. Participants will enhance creative thinking in Speech-Language Pathology graduate students by setting solid requirements (e.g. planning, material
creation, and/or in-service/collegial learning opportunities). (Graebe and Holland) 3. Participants will recognize needed skill sets for graduate student clinicians with an emphasis on skills that translate across a variety of settings. (Holland)
Module 3: This module will focus on the ethical components of supervision to promote awareness of the obligation and responsibility a clinical education supervisor holds when taking on graduate student clinicians or SLP-As. Speakers for this session will be Karen Haines and Leslie Graebe. The following objectives have been identified: 1. Participants will recognize the difference between level of supervision required for a Speech-Language Pathology graduate student and a SLP-A in consideration of types of services provided as defined by ASHA. (Graebe) 2. Participants will review the WVDE Employee Code of Conduct Policy 5902 and discuss how it aligns with ASHA’s Code of Ethics to promote accountability. (Haines) 3. Participants will listen to ethical dilemmas of supervision that may arise from either an issue of conduct or failure to comply with the Code of Ethics and discuss solutions from various points of view (e.g. personal, bystander, or student/parent). (Haines and Graebe)
