About John Barnard
Dr. John Barnard is a fellowship-trained reconstructive urologic surgeon and currently serves as the Chief of Reconstructive Urology and Associate Program Director of the Urology Residency Program at West Virginia University. Originally from Ripley, West Virginia, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from West Virginia University and his Medical Doctorate from West Virginia University School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery Preliminary Year and Urologic Surgery Residency at WVU Hospitals in Morgantown, WV. He then completed advanced fellowship training in a Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery (GURS) society accredited program focusing on genitourinary reconstruction and urologic prosthetics at the University of California – Irvine in Orange, California.
Dr. Barnard specializes in the surgical management of complex cases relating to obstruction of the urinary tract, disorders of the male genitalia (ED, urinary incontinence, Peyronie’s, Complications of Genital Enlargement surgery, Lymphedema, Hidradenitis, Acquired Buried Penis), and abdominopelvic cancer survivorship issues arising from both surgical treatments and directed energy sources (Radiation, HIFU, Cryotherapy, etc). He utilizes both traditional surgical approaches and minimally invasive robotic surgical techniques with a focus on improving and optimizing patient function and quality of life. His passion is improving awareness about reconstructive urology disease processes in the region and developing patient care pathways to minimize delays in definitive treatment. He is actively involved in resident and medical student education at WVU, and participates in various capacities within the mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urological Association, Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery Society (GURS), and Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA). Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Barnard is a passionate outdoorsman who enjoys archery hunting, fishing, backcountry hiking, golf, and traveling with his wife and children.
