Why did you choose WVU?: I chose WVU for two primary reasons. First, it was clear that the people here are different. The term “family” is thrown around too often, but it is easy to use when everyone is on a first name basis and you know everyone’s pets. There is a deep culture of support and camaraderie which stems from the very top of the leadership and through each class of residents. There is a pervasive “shirt off their back” attitude here and the result is an environment where everyone is motivated to work for one another. Second, WVU is a true hybrid program. It serves a huge population from several states, providing diverse pathology. Residents work in West Virginia’s primary academic center, Ruby Memorial, several rural EDs through the REMI program, and have a community experience through WVU’s United Hospital Center.
Brief bio: I grew up in Jackson, Tennessee and went to college in Jackson, Mississippi. During those years, I became passionate about wakeboarding, I played soccer at Millsaps College. and later was a goalkeeper coach. When I moved to East Tennessee for medical school, I fell in love with Appalachia and everything it offered. I began wakeboarding even more, but also found new hobbies to soak up my time, such as backpacking, fly fishing, and snowboarding. These days, I still spend most of my time outdoors with those same hobbies. However, if you do find me at home, I will be chasing my dog, Harper, grilling a thick cut of meat, or taking board games way too seriously.
