About Marian Reven
Dr. Marian “Marnie” Reven is an energetic teacher and scholar engaged in bridging the gap between traditional and integrative medicine and nursing practice. As a nurse for over 34 years, Marnie brings an understanding of healthcare that makes a difference during vital conversations with leadership, administrators, policy makers and more.
In addition to nursing, aromatherapy is a passion as well as a serious endeavor. Marnie has invested over 500 hours of education in aromatherapy and is the only practicing Registered Aromatherapist in the state of WV.
Marnie serves on several boards and many committees including the Alliance of International Aromatherapists, the Aromatic research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (ARQAT), and Sigma Theta Tau, Alpha Rho Chapter.
Her 2019 aromatherapy patch research study at the outpatient oncology center at Ruby Memorial has been presented in poster and in presentation form and was published in the spring of 2020 in the International Journal of Professional Holistic Aromatherapists.
Her 2021 work to create a quality appraisal checklist for aromatherapy research in human reporting was published in November 2023 in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine https://doi.org/10.1089/jicm.2023.0006.
Studies in progress include Dr. Reven's randomized controlled clinical trial, Using aromatherapy in substance use disorder, NCT05660434. Her qualitative descriptive study about aromatherapy and sleep in rural Appalachian women. And her Delphi consensus study to create an aromatherapy research in humans focused guide that is registered with the Equator Network https://www.equator-network.org/.
Finally, Marnie is a proud member of the American Holistic Nurses Association, and the WVNA.

Teaching interests: Teaching is a serious passion. All levels of nursing education, both classroom and clinical. Incorporating caring into every aspect, believing each person is a sacred life, and striving for excellence defines this practice commitment.
Research Interests
Research interests center on nursing and the phenomenon of aromatherapy and how it works to make humans feel better and have more hope. This is in the area of palliative care, mental health, and education. Qualitative and quantitative designs are utilized. Building concepts to lift truths about this phenomenon using the nursing conceptual framework of caring and human wholeness as the foundation. Philosophical underpinnings in intermodernism where the tangible and intangible are acknowledged and explored.
