About Dena Birney
Dena Birney, MD is an Assistant Professor for the West Virginia University Department of Anesthesiology. She joined the Department of Anesthesiology as a member of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology in 2024. She is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (Anesthesiology, 2024; Cardiac Anesthesiology, 2024) and National Board Echocardiography (Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography, 2024). Dr. Birney earned her Doctor of Medicine at St. George’s University School of Medicine in St. George’s, Grenada, in 2019. She completed her Anesthesiology Residency at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV in 2023. She completed her fellowship in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at West Virginia University in 2024. Dr. Birney served as the Associate Program Director for the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship from 2025-2026 and is currently as the Associate Program Director for the Anesthesiology Residency Program since September 2026.
