About Timothy Eubank
Timothy D. Eubank, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology in the WVU School of Medicine. His research program focuses on how myeloid cells - particularly circulating monocytes and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) - regulate vascular dysfunction, hypoxia, immune suppression, and therapeutic resistance in solid tumors.
Dr. Eubank’s laboratory has made important contributions to understanding how macrophages can be therapeutically reprogrammed within the tumor microenvironment. His group demonstrated that GM-CSF induces monocytes and macrophages to produce soluble VEGFR-1, which sequesters excessive VEGF and promotes an angiostatic phenotype. His laboratory also helped define distinct roles for HIF-1α and HIF-2α in tumor macrophages and has continued to investigate how macrophage HIF biology influences tumor vascular function, oxygenation, and immune organization.
Current work in the Eubank laboratory is centered on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, a highly hypoxic and immunologically resistant cancer. The laboratory is investigating how hypoxia disrupts the relationship between tumor antigen processing and MHC-mediated antigen presentation, thereby limiting effective T cell recognition. A complementary area of research examines whether macrophage-directed vascular and oxygen remodeling can improve immune cell organization and increase tumor responsiveness to immunotherapy. The laboratory also studies circulating monocyte subsets as potential biomarkers and functional mediators of chemotherapy response, including their recruitment and differentiation within pancreatic tumors.
These studies integrate genetically engineered orthotopic PDAC tumor models, human biospecimens, electron paramagnetic resonance oxygen imaging, multiplex fluorescence imaging, spatial transcriptomics, single cell analysis, flow cytometry, and computational approaches.
Dr. Eubank has published extensively in tumor immunology, macrophage biology, angiogenesis, and hypoxia and has received several research grants including PI on the K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award, and multiple R01s from the National Cancer Institute and other federal and foundation sources. He is also deeply committed to mentoring graduate students and junior faculty, with particular emphasis on scientific rigor, grant writing, career development, and collaborative research.

Research Interests
Dr. Eubank’s research focuses on how monocytes and macrophages regulate vascular dysfunction, hypoxia, immune suppression, and therapeutic resistance in solid tumors, with particular emphasis on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and breast cancer. His laboratory investigates functionally distinct myeloid cell populations that promote tumor progression, sustain abnormal and unproductive angiogenesis, and contribute to the development of chronically hypoxic tumor microenvironments.
A major component of this work is the quantitative measurement of tumor microenvironment physiology. In collaboration with investigators in biochemistry and pharmaceutical sciences, including Drs. Valery Khramtsov, Benoit Driesschaert, and Mark Tseytlin, the laboratory uses particulate and soluble electron paramagnetic resonance probes and EPR imaging to measure tumor oxygenation and related physiological parameters. These approaches can be integrated with multiplex immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, spatial analysis, and complementary imaging methods to define how myeloid cell behavior is associated with regional hypoxia, vascular function, and immune organization.
The laboratory is also investigating how hypoxia alters tumor antigen processing and MHC-mediated presentation, thereby limiting effective T cell recognition in pancreatic cancer. Complementary studies examine whether macrophage-directed reprogramming, particularly through induction of soluble VEGFR-1 and sequestration of excessive VEGF, can improve vascular function, remodel tumor oxygenation, and increase responsiveness to immunotherapy.
An additional area of interest is the biology of circulating monocyte subsets as both biomarkers and mediators of treatment response. These studies seek to determine how distinct monocyte populations are recruited into pancreatic tumors, how they differentiate within the tumor microenvironment, and whether their abundance or functional state can predict therapeutic outcome. This work includes collaboration with robotic surgical oncologist, Dr. Brian Boone.
