About Tara Hulsey
Dr. Hulsey assumed the role of Dean and E. Jane Martin Professor for the West Virginia University School of Nursing in June 2014. She is also the Vice President of Health Promotion and Wellness for West Virginia University.
Previously, she was dean and professor at Charleston Southern University College of Nursing and Allied Health in Charleston, SC. She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Hulsey's practice and education specialty is perinatal nursing, and she has served as a curriculum consultant in the United States and China.
She has held numerous leadership roles at the local, state, national, and international levels, most recently as the chair of the United Nations and Global Health Advisory Council for the international honor society for nursing. Dr. Hulsey has secured more than $2 million in grant funding and was principal investigator as one of the 15 pilot schools in the country for the Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN) initiative. Her research interest in is high-risk pregnancy outcomes and maternal pregnancy behaviors.
She is a grant reviewer for HRSA and on the editorial board of the international Journal of Nursing Education. She is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow Alumnus and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. In South Carolina, she held a gubernatorial appointment to the Board of Nursing and was on the Board of Directors for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing.
In 2017, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice re-appointed Dean Hulsey to a five-year term on the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses. She was also was re-elected president of the Board.
