Joint replacement usually lasts decades, but a small fraction of implants become infected. Bacteria form biofilm on the implant surface and survive inside host cells, where antibiotics struggle to reach them, and the patient can face repeated surgery. My lab attacks this from both ends: bench work on S. aureus  biofilm, antimicrobial peptides, nanoparticle coatings, antibiotic-eluting cement and spacer design, and the host cytokine and mitochondrial response; and clinical work on revision arthroplasty outcomes, PJI diagnosis, and patient distress. The program is supported by NIH, NSF, PCORI, and CTSI funding.
