About Osama Al-Omar
Osama Al-Omar, MD, is a Professor and Chief of Pediatric Urology at West Virginia University (WVU) Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Dr. Al-Omar earned his medical degree at Aleppo University School of Medicine in Aleppo, Syria in 1996. In 2002, he completed his urology residency at Tishreen Military Hospital in Damascus, Syria. In 2005, he completed his pediatric urology fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He is board certified by the American Board of Urology (Adult Urology), with subspeciality board certification by the American Board of Urology in Pediatric Urology.
Dr. Al-Omar practices only in the field of pediatric urology with a special interest in: external genitalia reconstructive surgery (hypospadias, undescended testes, hydrocele), fetal evaluation of urological anomalies (prenatal hydronephrosis), vesicoureteral reflux, UTIs, ureteropelvic junction obstructions, spina bifida and neurogenic bladder, and kidney/bladder stones.
Dr. Al-Omar has special expertise in pediatric robotic surgery, and he is the Director of Pediatric Urology Robotic Surgery at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. Dr. Al-Omar introduced pediatric robotic surgery to the state of West Virginia back in 2013, and has performed over 400 successful robotic surgeries in pediatric patients. He recently started a one of its kind in the nation program, “Same Day Discharge Pediatric Robotic Surgery,” with over 3 consecutive years of successful cases, which helps families and their children return safely to their home and communities on the same day of the surgery.
Dr. Al-Omar also has special expertise in hypospadias surgery and performs over 80 hypospadias cases annually. He developed a new surgical technique called “De-Epithelized Rotated Foreskin Flap (DERFF)” to minimize and lessen one of the most common complications in this surgery called urethrocutaneous fistula (UCF).
Dr. AL-Omar has authored and co-authored over 55 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, and remains involved in research work.
