About Lisa Costello
Lisa M. Costello, MD, MPH, FAAP is a lifelong West Virginian who hails from Weirton, WV. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department Pediatrics at West Virginia University (WVU) in Morgantown, WV and a Pediatric Hospitalist at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital. She is co-director of the Pediatrics Clerkship, leads a healthcare literacy and patient advocacy curriculum thread for the M.D. program, and is the advisor for the medical student group, Student Advocates Impacting Decision on Healthcare.
In 2007, she received a B.S. in biology with a minor in Communication Studies from West Virginia University where she was an invited walk-on to the women's basketball team for the 2003-2004 season. She later became involved in the WVU Student Government Association where she served as Chief-of-Staff and focused on student health and safety. For her academic work and extracurricular activities, she received WVU’s prestigious Ms. Mountaineer award in 2006, was inducted into Mountain Honorary (WVU’s ranking honorary), and was also named a Distinguished Mountaineer by Governor Joe Manchin III. She went on to complete her MD and MPH degrees at West Virginia University graduating in 2011. During medical school, she served as the WVU Mountaineer Mascot Selection Committee Chair, voting member of the WVU SoM Admissions and WVU SoM Dean Search Committees, and selected into the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS). She served as GHHS president and co-coordinated the nation’s first Gold Humanism Week. She received the School of Medicine Alumni Association President’s Young Alumnus Award.
From 2011-2015, Dr. Costello completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at WVU, serving as the program’s chief resident from 2014-2015. She then served as one of two Internal Medicine Chief residents from 2015-2016. As a resident, she was a member of the WVU Healthcare Culture Council, Medical Executive Committee, two-term member of the WVU Graduate Medical Education Committee, and selected into the national medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. At a state level she served as the resident board member on the West Virginia Political Action Committee (WESPAC). At a national level, she served on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Medical Students, Residents, and Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT) executive committee, was a tri-chair for the SOMSRFT 2013-14 advocacy campaign, Pediatricians Against Violence Everywhere (#PAVE), and co-chaired the SOMSRFT member value workgroup where she helped develop a national mentorship program and spearheaded enhancing communication in the section. For her advocacy work, she was the first resident to receive the Advocate for Children award from the WV Chapter of the AAP.
Dr. Costello currently serves as the president of the West Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, President-elect of the West Virginia State Medical Association, Vice-Chair of WESPAC, and serves on the Board of Directors for the WV Children’s Health Insurance Program. She is a member of Leadership WV Class of 2021. Dr. Costello currently serves as an advisor to the WV Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic response, Assistant Public Information Officer for Information Products, Joint Information Center, West Virginia Joint Interagency Task Force For COVID-19 Vaccines, and helped launch the #LETSGOgratitude project that teaches students about helpers in the pandemic and provides an opportunity for students to send messages of support for pandemic workers. At a national level, she is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on State Government Affairs. Dr. Costello is on the Executive Council for the WVU School of Medicine Alumni Association and a past recipient of the Margaret Buchanan Cole Young Alumnus Award from the WVU Alumni Association. Her academic interests include advocacy, healthcare policy, social media, and improving communication with patients, healthcare professionals, and the public by utilizing technology and media to amplify advocacy and education.
