About Jay Martello
John (Jay) L Martello, PharmD, BCPS, is a Clinical Associate Professor and Clinical Specialist in Internal Medicine with West Virginia University (WVU) School of Pharmacy and WVU Healthcare. He graduated from Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy in 2008, and subsequently completed a PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 2009, as well as a PGY-2 pharmacy specialty residency in internal medicine at WVU in 2010. He joined the faculty of WVU School of Pharmacy in 2010.
Dr. Martello maintains a clinical practice with the inpatient medicine services at Ruby Memorial Hospital, and also participates in several interdisciplinary committees at the hospital. He provides expert medication management of inpatients at Ruby Memorial Hospital, including disease state therapy, cost-containment concerns, and policy and formulary management. He has developed several protocols for the institution, and continues to work with all allied healthcare professions to provide the best patient care and outcomes possible.
Dr. Martello's teaching foci are endocrinology, psychiatry, hospital practice, inter-professional education, and experiential education. He has received several awards for teaching excellence from students of the WVU School of Pharmacy, as well as the associated residency programs at WVU Healthcare. In addition, he is the director of the PGY-2 specialty residency in internal medicine at WVU.
Dr. Martello has authored several papers in several fields, as well as several pharmacy book chapters. He has presented multiple posters of research and quality improvement projects at national meetings. He is a regular reviewer of manuscripts for the AJHP and Annals of Pharmacotherapy. In addition, he is nationally involved with organizations such as AACP, ACCP, and ASHP, working on organizational position statements and accrediting residency programs.
