About Steven Coutras
Steven Coutras, MD FACS is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at West Virginia University, where he has served since 2010. As a dual board-certified physician in both Otolaryngology and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Coutras specializes in surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and otolaryngic allergy. He serves as Chief of Sleep Medicine within the Department of Otolaryngology and holds a faculty appointment in the WVU Department of Sleep Medicine, where he chairs the Program Evaluation Committee for the Sleep Medicine Fellowship. His clinical practice focuses primarily on advanced sleep surgery techniques including drug-induced sleep endoscopy and multilevel airway procedures for both adult and pediatric patients.
Dr. Coutras earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Houghton College in 1976, followed by his medical degree from Georgetown School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his internship and otolaryngology residency at Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, serving as an active-duty Naval medical officer from 1981-1990, including deployment as a medical officer aboard the USS Sylvania and service as Department Head of Otolaryngology at Naval Hospital Guam. Following his military service, he spent nearly two decades in private practice before joining West Virginia University. He achieved board certification in Sleep Medicine in 2008, adding specialized expertise to his otolaryngology practice.
Dr. Coutras's clinical and research interests focus on advancing surgical treatments for obstructive sleep apnea, with particular expertise in pediatric sleep surgery and drug-induced sleep endoscopy. He has published extensively on sleep surgery outcomes, hypoglossal nerve stimulation complications, and pediatric sleep endoscopy scoring systems. His research contributions include development of reliable pediatric sleep endoscopy grading systems and investigation of multilevel airway surgery effectiveness. He has authored a book chapter on posterior midline glossectomy and serves as a co-investigator in FDA-approved clinical trials for novel sleep apnea treatment devices.
Dr. Coutras is a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, and maintains active membership in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and International Sleep Surgical Society. His recent achievements include receiving the 2021 Teaching Award from residents and serving as an oral examiner for the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy Fellow examination for over a decade. He has been a frequent invited speaker at national conferences including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine annual meetings and has served on the Board of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy. His commitment to education extends through his extensive involvement in fellowship training programs and his role in establishing the WVU Sleep Medicine Fellowship.
