Dr. Frederick C (Rick) Blum, MD, FACEP, FAAP, FIFEM grew up in Triadelphia WV in the northern panhandle. He has a bachelor’s degree in Biology from West Virginia University,and MD degree from WVU School of Medicine. He established the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics combined residency at WVU in 1981 and completed that residency in 1985. He has been a member of the faculty in Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at West Virginia University School of Medicine since 1985. He has practiced clinical emergency medicine and pediatric emergency medicine for the last 31 years. Dr. Blum helped to establish the Department of Emergency Medicine at WVU and the Emergency Medicine Residency training program. Dr Blum is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics.
He is a Past President of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is also a Past President and Secretary General of the International Federation of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Blum has served on the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), which is the national certifying body for the PA profession. He has dedicated the last 31 years to providing excellent emergency care to the citizens of WV in the Emergency Department at Ruby Memorial Hospital and to educating medical students and residents in the WVU School of Medicine. His research interests include, pediatric emergency medicine, environmental medicine, trauma and stroke
Dr Blum is married with two adult boys and one grandchild. He is an avid photographer, artist and archer and enjoys music, history, and cooking. For the past three decades, Dr Blum has been the medical director for the state diabetes camp for children. He travels and lectures widely around the US and the world.
