Practice Interest

The West Virginia Center for Drug and Health Information (WV CDHI), in operation for over 40 years (known previously as the West Virginia Drug Information Center), has as its mission service provision, student/practitioner education, and research/scholarly activities to optimize access to and the appropriate use of drug and therapeutics information to improve patient care. The WV CDHI serves as a comprehensive drug and drug therapy information resource, primarily geared to health care providers throughout West Virginia. The WV CDHI also works with community groups to enhance patient and public use of high quality medical information resources.

Dr. Marie Abate graduated from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. She is nationally known in the areas of drug information and assessment and has served as Director of the statewide West Virginia Center for Drug and Health Information (WV CDHI) for 25 years. She has served, primarily as principal or co-principal investigator, on about 30 funded research and educational projects totaling over $2 million. A current, ongoing project involves the maintenance of a forensics drug information database in collaboration with the WV Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. With colleagues, she had also developed an innovative computer educational program to teach students how to interpret and assess medical literature, which received an Innovations in Teaching award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. This material has since been converted to a textbook publication. Dr. Abate has also served as Director of Assessment for the School since 2004 and has conducted faculty development assessment workshops, provided assessment seminars locally and nationally, and facilitated the development of rubrics and tools to gather student learning outcomes data.
