Why did you choose WVU? I ranked WVU number 1 for several key reasons: first and foremost was the warm and welcoming working environment. I got along well with everyone I rotated with on my audition, and I knew several of the PGY1 residents from my time in medical school, a great bunch of people. Location was another major factor. West Virginia is a hidden gem if you like nice people, affordable housing, and the outdoors. Then there was the program itself, located in Ruby Memorial Hospital, a large level one trauma center with a huge catchment area. We have access to almost every major specialty so the ability to see rare cases, and to learn directly from the sub-specialists (not just stabilize patients to send them to the nearest major academic center) was a major point in WVU’s favor.
Brief bio: I’m an older resident having taken a non-traditional route to medicine. I’m a dad with 3 young kids. I was a pipe welder in New England for a few years before earning my engineering degree and working on the nuclear construction projects down in Georgia for 5 years. I spend most of my time surviving medicine and raising my kids. When I’m not working on the house, I like hiking with my family, playing the occasional videogame, and baking.
