Why did you choose WVU? I really wanted a Level 1 trauma center with a Pediatric hospital somewhere we would love to live. West Virginia has everything I wanted and more. Having longitudinal pediatrics was something I valued when looking at programs, and it is a strength of WVU. They also have longitudinal EMS throughout residency, which as someone who comes from an EMS background that was also something I wanted to find. Add to this West Virginia is an absolute hidden gem for outdoors and friendly communities, and it was an easy choice to rank WVU at the top of our list.
Brief bio: I took the more scenic route to becoming a doctor, not deciding to attend medical school until after I had already finished my undergrad. I worked as an EMT, then Paramedic for a total of 5 years before medical school. I also spent my summers as a wildland firefighter on the traveling crew to fight fires around the western United States. In addition, during all this time I was in the Utah Army National Guard as a mechanic. I love the outdoors, with some of my major hobbies being dirt biking, mountain biking, backpacking, and river rafting. This was a big part of my decision to rank WVU at the top because the outdoor scene here is top notch. I also take care of my mental health through fitness, having cycled through being a competitive powerlifter and trail runner. Most recently I competed in a powerlifting meet at the end of my 4th year of medical school. I have a wonderful family that includes a beautiful 3-year-old girl, and a new 1 month old son. My girl is a wild child and swims like a fish and wrestles like she is trying out for the WWE. My son is just working on holding his head up. My wife makes this entire operation possible as she is the glue that keeps our little family together. This is a program full of families, with great friendships and support.
