About Elizabeth Steele

Hometown: Mount Airy, Maryland
Undergraduate institution: University of Maryland
Graduate institution: Johns Hopkins University
Medical school: West Virginia University School of Medicine
Why did you choose WVU? I chose WVU because of its supportive community and strong focus on rural health. The mentors here inspire me, and I truly enjoy the mountain lifestyle.
Brief bio: Dr. Elizabeth Steele completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland before beginning a career in federal law enforcement, where she worked on complex investigations in special operations. While serving, she earned a master’s degree in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University and later attended medical school at West Virginia University.
Now training in emergency medicine, she brings the same strong commitment to service into healthcare. During medical school, she was actively involved in WVU’s rural track program, gaining firsthand experience delivering care in underserved communities—a commitment she continues to carry forward in her clinical training.
Her professional interests include improving access to timely, high-quality emergency care in rural areas, and she remains actively involved in WVU School of Medicine’s rural track program to support and mentor medical students pursuing rural medicine. Outside of medicine, she enjoys snowboarding, gardening, traveling with her husband and family, and hiking with their two Catahoula Leopard dogs, Maisy and Atlas.
