About Jesse McClure
My path to medical school and neurosurgery has been far from traditional. I grew up loving computers, chemistry, and tinkering. So, naturally, I became a drug dealer pharmacist. But that didn't quite fit, not to mention the constant hassles with the DEA. So, I switched gears from dealer to supplier and obtained a Ph.D. in Drug Discovery from the Medical University of South Carolina. I patented compounds, co-started and owned a biotech, and was granted an NIH-funded post-doctoral fellowship; but that didn't quite fit either. I realized my calling in life needed to combine patient care, the ability to research, and the ability to tinker with, utilize, and improve technology. The School of Medicine at the University of Virginia was where I happily landed. I found neurosurgery, and in particular for me, spine surgery, to be the perfect combination of patient care, research, and utilization of technology to fulfill my purpose in life. I was brought to WVU by its focus on innovative therapies, breadth and quality of research opportunities, early operative time and large operative volume to resident ratio, as well as being in perhaps the single best city associated with a neurosurgery residency to raise a family.
