Trauma and hemorrhage remain a leading cause of mortality in America, and rural patients are at a significantly higher risk than urban counterparts. Rural patients would intuitively seem to be at a disadvantage due to remote location, and challenges accessing high level surgical care. Study after study has shown this, with rural patient having a disproportionately higher mortality than matched urban counterparts. Despite efforts to expand trauma systems, the reality is that over one-third of Americans live more than an hour from high level trauma care. Our labs goals are to understand how time, distance, and limited access to care contribute to these findings, and to develop novel strategies to mitigate their effect

To meet these goals my research interests include basic science, outcomes, and clinical translational applications. Residents, medical students, and WVU students are involved at every stage of our research program. In addition to our local efforts, the research group participates annually in national multicenter trials, and is the founding center for the Appalachian Research Consortium on Trauma (ARC-Trauma). This national effort plans to study trauma outcomes exclusively in rural settings. ARC-Trauma is composed of six centers similar to WVU, all ACS Level 1 trauma centers with a large rural catchment basin. These centers have collaborated to develop a comprehensive database, with plans to answer multiple research questions and search for best practices in rural trauma care.
