Research Interests
Dr. Shapiro's research focuses on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), especially continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) nonadherence among adults newly diagnosed with OSA. She piloted a CPAP-adherence intervention, known as CPAP-SAVER, for her nursing dissertation and continues to develop the intervention and study factors influencing CPAP use. Dr. Shapiro is also interested in the implications of untreated OSA, especially psychological sequelae and the effects of untreated sleep apnea on other lung diseases and heart failure. She has also studied the implications of sleep quality on undergraduate nursing students' stress and resilience.
