About Dean Bonsall
Dean J. Bonsall, M.D., M.S., FACS, FAAP is a fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist, specializing in pediatric medical, surgical and optical eye disorders, as well as pediatric and adult strabismus. Dr. Bonsall is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics. He also serves as the Director of the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus Service at the West Virginia University Eye Institute.
He holds an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Albright College. After medical school at the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Bonsall completed his internship at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University and his Ophthalmology Residency at Georgetown University. He then served as Chief Resident in Ophthalmology at Georgetown University. His fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus was completed in 1998 at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He has been an academic pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismologist his entire career. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and recently recertified in 2010. He is a member of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was also elected by his peers into Best Doctors in America in 2007.
Dr. Bonsall also holds a Master's Degree in Health Evaluation Science from the Pennsylvania State University. His clinical interests include strabismus, phakomatoses, retinopathy of prematurity and ocular manifestations of metabolic disorders. His research interests include amblyopia treatment and shaken baby syndrome.
